From the organ arrangement, this organ's concept is no doubt rooted in the French Romantic era. Many instruments complying with today's taste actually have a French Recit Expressif, but their other sections follow a different style to also allow the interpretation of the music of e.g. the Baroque Era. Especially for smaller organs such a compromise is the preferred solution, considering the limited number of available registers. However, more often than not this results in a sound isolation of the swell from all other organ sections. The scaling and intonation of this organ in Schmelz, however, was designed for all sections to blend into the French Romantic sound. Various registers, especially the mixtures and tongues, are orientated by the scaling scheme set by the French organ manufacturer Aristide Cavaille-Coll. In order to make the intonation of the organ as authentic as possible in the sense of this grand master of organ building, we went to Paris before we even started the intonation work. This way, the acoustic impressions we gained from the great Cavaille-Coll organs were smoothly incorporated into the intonation of this organ.

The instrument has 31 resounding registers, distributed onto two manuals and one pedal. For reasons of economy, the registers Octave 8', Gedackt bass 8' and Trumpet 8'were built as pedal tracts of each register's level 16'. This system has been widely approved in its technical and sound aspects. The organ front was designed in cooperation with the construction office of the Trier diocese. The organist of the Dome in Trier, Mr. Josef Still, accompanied the project with his organ expertise in theory and practice.

The organ frame made of 15 m3 solid oak is 9.52 m wide and 7.50 m high. It is cut into three sections by the windows in the church's West wing. The frame's middle section houses the swell with 14 registers. The pipes in the organ front of the pedal register Principal 16' cover the framed blinds.

The labial registers of the swell are in its rear section and set onto C and Cs windchests, respectively. In the front and seperated through a tuning alley, the tongue pipes stand on a separate windchest with a higher wind pressure. Due to their exposed location, the swell tongues, if played by themselves, have the effect of a bombarde section.

The left and right frame wings hold the pedal and main wind chests in a diatone pipe arrangement. The pipes in the organ front, 75% made of a tin-lead alloy, have been taken from the registers Principal 16' (starting at D) and Principal 8' (starting at C).

With the exception of the tongue register, the pipe section was manufactured in our own pipe shop. All mixtures are cut to key. The violin volces, the principals and the predominant flutes have an expression typical of the Romantic era.

The organ has an electronic tuning system with 4000 memory locations. The operating elements are integrated into the keyboard table meeting ergonomic as well as aesthetic requirements. The easel on the right side of the keyboard table holds the operator's display to set the different programming levels. And there is yet another display directly in the organ player's view just below the sheet-music desk showing the combination selected. Furthermore, there are 3 sequencing units (+/-).

Besides the regular couples, the instrument has two mechanical octave couples. The couple Sub Il-ll, among other things, serves to amplify level 16' by creating different tone shades. The installation of couple Super Il-P extended the possibilities in the cantus firmus range, especially considering Clairon 4' in the llnd manual which has not been set.
